چکیده

Peptonized milk, a t rypt ic digest of skim milk, proved unacceptable as a protein source for artificially reared piglets. When this product was substi tuted for dried skim milk, rate and efficiency of gain were sharply decreased and incidence and severity of diarrhea markedly increased. Rectal temperature was decreased. The difference in nutritiona~ adequacy of the diets, measured by a chick growth study, was not nearly sufficient to explain the differences in piglet performance. Therefore, these results support the hypothesis that some component(s) of milk is important to the piglet for reasons other than classical nutrient content. (

Milk proteins for artificially reared piglets: I. Comparison to egg white protein and effect of added immunoglobulins.

Egg white proved to be an unsatisfactory protein source for artificially reared piglets. Rate of gain and gain/feed were depressed, while incidence aod severity of diarrhea and in some trials mortality were greater among piglets fed a diet based on egg white compared to those fed a dried skim milk diet. The same two protein sources were compared in diets of rats beyond the early suckling stage,...

Comparison of Antioxidant Activities of Hydrolysates of Domestic and Imported Skim Milk Powders Treated with Papain

Milk proteins have many potential sequences within their primary structure, each with a specific biological activity. In this study, we compared and investigated the bioactivities of hydrolysates of the domestic (A, B) and imported (C, D) skim milk powders generated using papain digestion. MALDI-TOF analysis revealed that all milk powder proteins were intact, indicating no autolysis. Electropho...

Diarrhea: the nemesis of the artificially reared, early weaned piglet and a strategy for defense.

Rearing early weaned piglets artificially for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of the sow is an attractive management concept. However, high death losses resulting from diarrhea in artificially reared piglets have dampered enthusiasm for early weaning. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, transmissible gastroenteritis virus and rotavirus are the three main enteropathogens responsible for c...

Backfat and carcass composition of piglets fed milk replacers containing vegetable oil compared with sow-reared piglets.

The carcass composition of piglets fed artificial milk was compared to sow-reared piglets. The artificial milk diets contained 25%, by weight, soybean oil or mixtures of canola and high erucic acid rapeseed oil. Both the total lipid and nitrogen (apparent) digestibility of the artificial milk diets was high, even when the dietary oil contained high levels of erucic acid. Sow-reared animals were...

Comparison of Brain Development in Sow-Reared and Artificially Reared Piglets

INTRODUCTION Provision of adequate nutrients is critical for proper growth and development of the neonate, yet the impact of breastfeeding versus formula feeding on neural maturation has to be fully determined. Using the piglet as a model for the human infant, our objective was to compare neurodevelopment of piglets that were either sow-reared (SR) or artificially reared (AR) in an artificial s...
